On 14th February, 54 students from Key Stage 4 and 5 confronted the rain and made a visit to the Tate Modern Art Gallery, London. Our A level and GCSE artists,  had the opportunity to investigate and respond to art work within the spectacular setting. The Tate’s vast collection of art ranges from 1500 to the present day, with a mixture of British, International and contemporary art. With nearly 70,000 artworks by over 3,000 artists and grows every year.

It was very encouraging to see our students embrace the collection which forces them to consider the never ending question,  “What is Art?” This question amongst many others will be considered as our artists embark upon their exam project and final outcomes.

Students came away from the day with a heightened awareness of contextual links and were able to form opinions as critical thinkers, confident in their ability to analyse and respond to both traditional and modern art. Their sketchbook pages, which form a vital part of their evidence is a testament to this. A year 10 student referred to the gallery as inspirational.

The art department are very much looking forward to seeing the positive impact the gallery will have on our students work.
